Senator Jane Nelson is a Republican representing Senate District 12, which includes the growing suburban communities of Tarrant and Denton counties and part of the city of Fort Worth. She took office in 1992 after two successful terms on the State Board of Education. While serving on the State Board she led the fight to correct more than 5,000 factual errors in our public school textbooks.

Senator Nelson is the fourth highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate and was recently named Chairman of the Health & Human Services Committee, becoming the first Republican woman to hold this position. Senator Nelson served as Chairman of the Health Services Committee from 1999-2000 and as Chairman of the Nominations Committee from 2001-2002. In addition to her duties on health care, she is serving a four-year term as Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission, which will oversee the re-authorization acts for 29 state agencies, boards and commissions this session.

Senator Nelson is a key lawmaker on Texas health care policy. Her immediate goals are to make quality health care more accessible to Texas families, to enact sensible medical tort reform to prevent precious health care dollars from being diverted to fight frivolous lawsuits and to promote good health habits, especially among children. She will also work to mitigate the payment problems between health care providers and insurance companies.

A strong advocate for patients, Senator Nelson authored Texas' first comprehensive medical privacy law and was among the group of Senators who wrote Texas' landmark HMO reform laws to make HMOs more accountable. She has championed children's health by working to prevent child obesity and reduce tobacco use among teens. She also fought to improve breast cancer services, prevent prescription errors and make lifesaving automatic defibrillators more widely available. More . . .
